I told Verizon I manage my own LAN and to connect my wall-mounted RJ45 to their WAN and they put in this ONT. it is available on eBay for around $20. I use a home-built miniPC with a PCI quad-NIC running Sophos UTM9 in a Virtualbox on Linux as the main router that does DHCP for WAN and three different subnets on the LAN side (smart home/iot, hobby lab and general purpose family subnets). I think you can just buy a ONT off eBay and be done. I believe it’s a Alcatel thing.

That's interesting.  Can you send me the make and model number of what you're talking about? I did almost the same thing with Verizon.  What I insisted on was that the ONT have an Ethernet connection and not the coax connection that it typically comes with.   Once I did that, I plugged my router in and then plugged their router into my router.  Phone worked fine.  The TV may have worked fine, but I don't really remember as neither my wife nor I ever watched it.

Keith, If you want a landline number its different. So both Zen and BT offer a landline service but it only works if you use their router. So my phone is connected to my ZEN router and my previous router is then in a downstream port in “DMZ” mode. (DMZ is a misnomer). The other issue is some Fibre ISPs use CGNAT and you have to pay for a routable IP address. With ZEN you get a single fixed IP address. Great. Bob, Well yes but its another device using power , that has to be purchased and configured. So my supplier Zen offer to port your number and provision it on your router for £6/month which includes 1000 mins/month. Their router has a socket you can patch into your existing phones or it can act as a DECT base station which makes providing resilience in the event of power fail easy, just power the ONT and router, my DECT phones are specified as having 10 days on standby… .. or you can get just a number from Andrews & Arnold (A&A) who have a super cheap service for £1.20/month so saving £60/year. However you need to buy hardware and the cheapest I could find looks to be around £50. If you buy from A&A more like £150 and then you need extra UPS if you want it to work in a power cut….. … so a long time before you really save…. If you’re willing to configure your own SIP phone, or better yet set up Asterisk, then there are any number of providers out there that offer call termination DIDs for way less than the ISPs do. We use DIDforSale.com and get two dial in numbers for about $3-4 per month. One caveat is that the calls are metered, so if you talk a lot then you’ll pay more. Bob

After a bunch more research, it turns out that running your own router (and thus controlling your public IP) with OO Fiber is almost as easy as it used to be with an OO cable modem. Previously, you didn't have to do anything at all except perhaps clone the MAC address of whatever had first been plugged into the cable modem. All you have to do now is call OO technical support and tell them that you manage your home LAN and request that the ONT be put into BYOR (Bring Your Own Router) mode.  The claim is that they 'misdocumented' this in their level one help and have since updated the material. So I did and it came right up.
