Site renumbering (new area 8) + bits and bobs

Guys, We (well mostly Steve D) today did a renumbering exercise on my systems (CHIMPY, RHESUS, GORVAX and FIDOGW) into a new area, 8. Please be sure to pull a new node database off MIM to continue to be able to reach my site. Also, because of the renumbering, MIM is no longer getting annoying error messages so I am running the phone directory poller again, it's at http://rhesus.sampsa.com/hecnetdir.html Sampsa

One machine will run Multinet, one will run the bridge. Let me know if I need to be able to bring everything up. Also, all of the various gateways should be stable by then so we can really show something. That's because the new system disk build went into mount-verify-timeout. Never a good thing... I'm still looking for a replace disk. Also, the TOY clock and battery are having some issues. I'd also like to get a script running to determine the active state of the network, and in the long run a bit of client site charting to produce a network diagram. In the first instance I'd like email suggestions of content please (or you can email me actual content). The idea in the long run is to create a batch job that will scan the decnet default directory and pickup contributions to put on the wall by automatically converting the ascii files into HTML. I'd also like to create an online tutorial/faq to walk people through the basic decnet/bridge setup as well as point out any common issues. Lots of ideas in the pipeline - we did talk about issuing @hecnet.eu email address which would automatically get piped through a SMTP gateway - which would also be very nice. It'd also be nice to get some bios & backgrounds on people using hecnet - sometimes even though it's a big network it can feel a bit lonely! Just FYI, my Vodafone 3g dongle DOES work as a dial up GSM modem as well :) Which I think is pretty cool. I thought of automating this (I'm currently developing a HECnet node info database system, mainly as a learning exercise for Python and Oracle RDB) by having some entries in a database table, namely WAN links and LANs. Basically, a WAN link entry would indicate two end points (either bridge or MULTINET) whilst nodes are allocated membership in a LAN - from these two sets of data it would be possible to draw up a basic network diagram. Of course this would entail either some kind of crawler to populate the database or someone to manually keep this info up to date. Sampsa

While I have address allocations for DECnet nodes kahea and lani, I'm not online with them yet. Many years ago I did lots of hardware diagnostics on raw hardware (no operating systems) in assembly language and machine code in support of hardware design validation and manufacturing and field diagnostics.
