Hmmm,
I thought area 42 was mine. What happened? I know my gateway has been down for a while, but hopefully it'll be back up this week.

I'll go telnet to mim and grab it from there.

What are the IPs for those? I'll connect a random node on another
friend's server while i'm at it (extranet.wilcox-tech.com is the host
for it. It's static)
That doesn't need it's own area though, can I piggyback off someone
else's? ;)

Subject: [HECnet] Getting a virtual cluster connected
Hello everyone!
I've decided to bring up the random virtual cluster I was running on
a
friend's server, and I want to get it connected to HECnet. ;)
The IP is static so connecting it should be easier, the server is in
North Carolina. It's looking like i'll need to go install multinet
on
one of the cluster members as that'll be easier than bringing up a
linux
VM to run Johnny''s bridge. ;)
What areas are available? I'll go renumber to one of the free
areas...once I either remember or reset the SYSTEM password.
Thanks.

What about area 9, which is already allocated to you?
The area router for 9 is here at my house though, and the IP here isn't static, so it'd be a bit challenging to get that to work.
So? I don't see the problem. Have both places use the same area. Have an area router at each place (you need that anyway). Have a link between your two places. Done.
How would the link between the two places be done? I can do it via VPN for the Florida site and here, but i'd need to deal with dynamic IPs at the other site Actually no I wouldn't.
If you have a place with a dynamic IP, you already are dealing with this. How do you do it today?
We never quite got that working, so I think i'll just use option 2. I get a bit more control with that method anyway.
The link there is a bit less reliable, but the VPN auto reconnects.
I can route my house -> florida, and the NC site -> florida as well. And then from Florida -> HECnet.
Yes. That would also work.
I'll go do that then.
Add TSTBD6 (9.15) to the area list, then.
Johnny
However, if I claim area 14, I could setup a multinet tunnel between that site and the SIMH instances running on another friend's stuff.
Thoughts?
Yeah. While we're not out of areas, I think it's time to atleast use them somewhat more efficiently than this. A new area for each place you set up is a bit much, me thinks.

Finland sucks man, seriously. Expensive and dull.
I suggest two meets: One in the US somewhere convenient, and a Europe/EMEA one somewhere nice and cheap like Malta or Cyprus.

Oh, it's been more than 10 years. You and I first setup that serial link

Like I said - we've already passed 10 years. :-)
I think I'd only played a year or so before we set up the link between us, so you were there back in the stone age...
As for what to do, I think it could be fun, but I also realize that by its very nature, we are spread out over a large area. So a get together might be hard. I'd be happy to host something in Zurich, if people could make it there. I could probably get place for playing around and so on, but no real idea for people to stay. Hotels are always expensive.
I'm visiting California from time to time, so I could join something there, but apart from those two places, the only place I might be is Stockholm, Sweden. Close to Finland, but not so much else. :-)

I did said quick hack from STUPI to GW, here's the new router graph:
http://www.sampsa.com/just-routers.svg
So my suggestion to those with "weird" links that we can't crawl is that they provide us with two things:
- A list of their connections to the rest of HECnet (i.e. the area routers)
- A list of the end nodes that are connected to their area routers
Formats for these will follow, they're basically CSV.
Is this OK, Dave etc with CISCO gear?
Yuck. Seriously, if you depend on manual information, it's going to be broken sooner or later.
I'm not at all clear what the problem is, though. I can, from MIM, tell which areas are online. And for each area, you can check which nodes are online in that area. After that, it just becomes a question of figuring out how the bits are connected.
