Configuring MULTINET (not the UDP tunnel, the TCP/IP stack) on satellite nodes...

Guys, I've currently got MULTINET running on my boot node on HILANT:: but would like a few of the other nodes to run it too. I've googled for documentation but can't seem to find anything on how to set it up on new nodes in a cluster. Any pointers? Sampsa

Well it worked for about 3 logons. It's borked again. Too bad nobody is maintaining the Linux DECNET packages anymore. I noticed a while back that incoming CTERM connections to PYFFLE:: (my Waffle BBS clone written in Python, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_(BBS_software) ) weren't working. So I reinstalled DECNET-Linux on the machine and it's all working again. Happy days. sampsa

HECnet mapping project

Just looking at the NSP protocol and doing some packet capture I am wondering if I can get away with a really basic subset of NSP, just enough to implement just enough of NICE. It may not work in all circumstances though. I will have a think, it might be my next project in this area. The problem is the CISCO gear doesnt talk NCP, so we can't do stuff like SHOW KNOW CIRC (to get routers to walk) or SHOW ADJ NODES (to get end nodes). If the CISCO guys want on the map, it'll have to be manual for now.... You'll have the same problem with Rob's DECnet router... And possibly other equipment, or nodes that don't want to talk NICE. I have just downloaded the spec and will think about how easy it would be to add this to the router, not that anyone other than me uses it :-( Johnny

You guys got off into the woods fast. :) I will look into non-dec router devices after we get the dec ones nailed down with my current code. I'm thinking possibly SNMP for the cisco devices, yes. Not 100% sure that'll work though. As to your router if you don't want to bother with NICE or SNMP just let me know how I remotely query your device. How that happens is up to you so long as it isn't silly. :) A simple API that shoots back something like JSON or XML is fine, for example. I have been out all day and was thinking along these lines myself. I could have a TCP or UDP port that sends back a file in some format on receiving a request. I could implement a pseudo-NCP interface which accepts only exactly the commands it needs. The only problem I see with this is that you wouldn't necessarily know the IP address from the DECnet address so it wouldn't be readily discoverable without some manual configuration of known "other" routers. The alternative would be for the router to periodically post the information somewhere, perhaps send the data over UDP or TCP to some location or other? Any other suggestions welcome.
