Hello all,
Just added a simh vax 11/780 to HECnet node 31.270 (FATTY) . Circuit is up. Using the
copy known nodes command I get "unable to connect to listener" error. Any
thoughts on this?

Hi Brian - MIM might have temporary reachability problems, but IMPVAX 31.1 maintains a
fairly current copy - you could try to add 31.1 IMPVAX manually and then copy from there.

you might have two nodes with the same number.

identifies itself as PyDECnet. Which is why I am wondering if perhaps
Brian have configured two nodes with the same address, which would also
explain why he is failing to copy the nodename database to his VAX...

No, I only have the single machine running right now. I went through the configuration
file on PyDECnet and noticed I did not have a node defined "node 31.270 FATTY" .
I see where that is optional but required for the routing node? I restarted PyDECnet and
executed COPY KNOWN NODES FROM 31.1 USING PERMANANT but still get "unable to connect

I created another simh machine. 31.271 (LIBBY) VAX 8650 and added it to HECnet. I was
able to execute NCP commands just fine on that machine. Both it and the 11/780 are running
on a single Pi 3. So the problem looks like it is in the 11/780 machine itself.

Hi Brian,
I have a very similar setup to yours and am actually your closest neighbour
in Supratim's 31.* block of addresses:
HUEY 31.260 - My PyDECnet router
DUEY 31.261 - OpenVMS VAX8600 (SIMH)
LUEY 31.262 - OpenVMS VAX8600 (SIMH)

Unfortunately, my systems are all offline at the moment, but, at times, I
have run all three on a single raspberry Pi. Other times I have moved them
around onto other systems. Currently I'm planning to move my VMS nodes to
my local NAS. From what I see in your post, if your second system is
31.271, then as Johnny wrote, perhaps your first system and your router are
sharing the same DECnet address. As you can see in my list, my
PyDECnet router is configured as an independent decnet node with a distinct
address, even though it is running on the same physical machine. When your
PyDECnet is up (presumably with address 31.270) and your 1st VAX
(presumably also with address 31.270) is down, then your 2nd VAX (31.271)
should be working normally - which seems to be what was reported. Perhaps
try changing the DECnet address on your 1st VAX to 31.272 and see what
happens. Just making some guesses, but could be worth a try?

I created another simh machine. 31.271 (LIBBY) VAX 8650 and added it to
HECnet. I was able to execute NCP commands just fine on that machine. Both
it and the 11/780 are running on a single Pi 3. So the problem looks like
it is in the 11/780 machine itself.

Hi, just an additional thing to consider. I don’t remember the requirements or symptoms of
keeping your SCS node and ID the same as your DECnet node address but could this be an

Hi, just an additional thing to consider. I don’t remember the requirements or symptoms of
keeping your SCS node and ID the same as your DECnet node address but could this be an
issue here?

I have a very similar setup to yours and am actually your closest neighbour in
Supratim's 31.* block of addresses:
HUEY 31.260 - My PyDECnet router
DUEY 31.261 - OpenVMS VAX8600 (SIMH)
LUEY 31.262 - OpenVMS VAX8600 (SIMH)

Unfortunately, my systems are all offline at the moment, but, at times, I have run all
three on a single raspberry Pi. Other times I have moved them around onto other systems.
Currently I'm planning to move my VMS nodes to my local NAS. From what I see in your
post, if your second system is 31.271, then as Johnny wrote, perhaps your first system and
your router are sharing the same DECnet address. As you can see in my list, my
PyDECnet router is configured as an independent decnet node with a distinct address, even
though it is running on the same physical machine. When your PyDECnet is up (presumably
with address 31.270) and your 1st VAX (presumably also with address 31.270) is down, then
your 2nd VAX (31.271) should be working normally - which seems to be what was reported.
Perhaps try changing the DECnet address on your 1st VAX to 31.272 and see what happens.
Just making some guesses, but could be worth a try?

I created another simh machine. 31.271 (LIBBY) VAX 8650 and added it to HECnet. I was able
to execute NCP commands just fine on that machine. Both it and the 11/780 are running on a
single Pi 3. So the problem looks like it is in the 11/780 machine itself.

Yes. That is what Brian said. But if you try talking to it, it
identifies itself as PyDECnet. Which is why I am wondering if perhaps
Brian have configured two nodes with the same address, which would also
explain why he is failing to copy the nodename database to his VAX...

The sources for DECNET-8 can be found. And you need to run RTS-8 for it.
And it can only talk DDCMP, so you need a serial line connection.
The manuals for the whole thing can also be found online. But there is
very little beyond the basic framework. You were expected to write your
own tasks that the communicated over DECnet under RTS-8.
RTS-8 is a very embedded type of system. It's not something you can log
in to, and use as a generic system.

don't think DEC ever got around to actually selling it, and I've never heard an
example of anyone getting it working.

into the host machine (with user name PDP8?) and it just connects you to that serial

TSS-8 wouldn't have a chance of doing DECnet, I'd say.
But in another way, that would perhaps have been an interesting system
to have it for. But by DECnet time, TSS-8 was mostly not worked on
anymore. But the PDP-8 is a fun architecture. The only serious
misfeature is the interrupt handling around changed instruction field,
which forces anyone who wants to implement virtual memory to implement
full emulation of the PDP-8 architecture for that one special case.

Hum, I don't think I ever knew that.
What I do remember is being puzzled about how you would implement code
in ROM because clearly a JMS won't work. One assumes that this is one
reason the equivalent PDP-10 instruction (JSR) eventually became less
used. I think some version of FOROTS still supported that calling
interface. You can also use it in ALGOL for external calls to
separately linked FOROTS subroutines, I think.
What's interesting to me is that, to this day, the IBM 390 ISA still
doesn't have a stack instruction. Just like the PDP-8.

The problem is that there is an interrupt inhibit flip flop, which gets
turned on at the CIF, and turned off again at the next JMP or JMS, at
which time the CIF actually takes effect.
However, if you have timesharing on, the CIF is actually trapped, and
you can then map to whatever instruction field you in reality want the
user to use. However, in the user context, that CIF is not supposed to
happen until the next JMP or JMS, so all the code between the CIF and

The 8/A did in fact have ROM code and capability. The way it is done is
that RAM have 13 bits, and is located at the same address as the ROM.
And if you write to memory, the 13th bit is used to indicate this, and
then the RAM takes over from the ROM for that address.
What's interesting to me is that, to this day, the

I just went back to the "decnet8.doc" file which is a DECnet for RTS-8 user
manual and internals document. Among other things, it describes the protocol (DDCMP and
NSP).
It's clearly Phase I, not Phase II, and the NSP protocol is different in significant
ways. It may be possible to deal with those differences. For example, Phase I has
"single message" service, which are encoded somewhat like ACK messages but using
flag bits that are reserved in the later NSP. If those aren't actually used by
DECnet/8 applications, that wouldn't need to be a problem.
And yes, there is a "route header". Unlike Phase II, it has node numbers rather
than node names. And I did see mention of it in nsp.pa suggesting that the implementation
has that support.
I don't know much about PDP-8 software, but if someone manages to get that code
running I'll take a stab at PyDECnet support for talking to it.

RT-11 is a fine system. We had an 11/05 in the WPI computer science lab
that I was an operator in that could run Unix and RT-11 (I always picked
RT-11). Modeling was done on a connected Tektronix four thousand
something, but it wasn't zippy fast due to the 9600 baud maximum speed
of the serial interfaces.
The mechanical engineering lab had an 11/45 running exclusively RT-11
with a GT40, which was a completely reasonable machine. Updates were
just wonderful, but you'd get flicker if your display list got too
long. That usually meant you needed to get clever about coalescing
display commands to shorten the list.
This was never as straightforward as I thought it should be; eventually
in another class I discovered that the problem was NP-complete in
certain cases.

Another way would be to fetch MIM::HECNET:HECNET.PY, also possible to
fetch by ftp. But obviously http is always easy.
Actually, let me setup a http://mim.stupi.net/hecnet.py url, which just
gives the file.

That's certainly a very cute way to do it, but why wouldn't you want to
use DECnet instead of IP? You could also FTP depending on whether you
have a Fascist firewall or not (if Johnny is running FTP). However, I
don't think the Unix ftp client would give you a reasonable return code
like curl might (?)
Of course, one of the things I'm looking to do is find bugs and squash
them and I have had to make a number of changes in the Tops-20 monitor,
the Galaxy libraries, FAL, NFT and DAPLIB. As a matter of fact, I still
haven't gotten to the bottom of a bug that I appear to have introduced
into FAL. Sigh... It's still my idea of fun.
I have awk on Tops-20, but every time I think about using a Unix utility
there, I get indigestion. Don't get me wrong, I tutor shell scripts and
awk and all that, but for personal use...
On the other hand, one assumes that I probably could have done the whole
SETNODE rewrite in a couple of scripts in a few days instead of doing it
in assembler in a few months. Oh well, it *IS* a hobby after all
