RT-11 is a fine system.  We had an 11/05 in the WPI computer science lab that I was an operator in that could run Unix and RT-11 (I always picked RT-11).   Modeling was done on a connected Tektronix four thousand something, but it wasn't zippy fast due to the 9600 baud maximum speed of the serial interfaces.

The mechanical engineering lab had an 11/45 running exclusively RT-11 with a GT40, which was a completely reasonable machine.  Updates were just wonderful, but you'd get flicker if your display list got too long.  That usually meant you needed to get clever about coalescing display commands to shorten the list.

This was never as straightforward as I thought it should be; eventually in another class I discovered that the problem was NP-complete in certain cases.

I dream of a RT-11 system on HECnet.

Personally, I'd be delighted to see a PDP-8 on HECnet.
