I could check if we could get a good bargain if ordering several.
Yes, I could use a few.

Hi all:
Have a VAX 4000/90 I've acquired (it was free). With video card in, all memory slots populated, new Dallas chip installed (research showed it may be a dead Dallas chip, which is why this was tried), all front diag lights light up, and do not move. No beeps, nothing. Nothing on a connected terminal. (which I know works as it's connected to my DECServer 90M that I use for consoles and other terminal access).
I've tried with less memory, different memory, etc.
Anyone have any pointers? Hitting the search engines hard (including finding the PDF manuals) has really come up empty on this specific set of circumstances.
I am hoping this isn't too far OT - I could post on c.o.v. but I think it's less of a "tiger pit" here. :) (Apologies to anyone on the list that also posts to c.o.v, *chuckle*)
Thanks,
Fred

Lets call it for what it is - "legacy" is a term that people use in a
polite but derogatory manner to imply that the future direction they
prefer is not that which they view as the current direction.

Done.

You will never again have full blows ESX so you don't have to worry there. :)
It's been a while since I've ssh-ed into a 5.1 host, but I know it's getting to be slim pickings for CLI stuff on the hypervisor itself.
The vMA has *all* the tools that you are used to using. You also only ever have one place to log into as well if you have more than one host.
Another nice feature of the vMA is you can auth against vCenter to do things on your ESXi hosts so your admins can do everything they need without actually giving them the root password of the ESXi box.
However, you can download the API tools (perl or PowerShell versions
available) or install the VMA (Virtual Management Appliance, just a
linux box with the tools already installed) you can do everything you
need to do from the CLI of your favorite OS.
Got a link for that? And will it work with 4.1?
vMA:
https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?productId=229&downloadGroup=VMA50
It should work with 4.1 as the API is backwards compatible. Newer vCenter can manager older ESXi, for example.
If you can use vCenter, the web based GUI in 5.1 is FANTASTIC and only
required flash. Works fine in Chrome.
If you need keys for 5 I might *cough* know *cough* where *cough* to get
some. *cough cough*. :)
Hmm! Please to be sending! Can I do an in-place upgrade from 4.1 to 5?
Yes. I'll send you an offline email.

I think I have another copy somewhere. I'm suspecting that the TK50

Ian,
This is usually down to the tape rather than the drive.
It is recommended that you 'bake' old tapes before reading them - over
time they become 'sticky'. IIRC a couple of hours at around 50 degC.
I have a load of tapes that I need to read off but I've currently got no
way of baking. I suspect that a standard oven, even on it's lowest
setting, will be too hot - you need something like an incubating oven. I
know someone who used to do this on a regular occasion and had very few
failures using this method.
Regards, Mark.
Is the takeup leader (the plastic ribbon which is fastened to the internal reel) intact? Its outer end which grabs the tape from the cassette is arrow-shaped. Is the "arrow" quite in order? If not, the takeup leader should be replaced.
You can also read a TK50 tape with a newer DLT drive like TZ85, TZ86 and TZ87.
As Mark said, the tapes tend to deteriorate even when stored in good conditions. It is recommended to retension the tapes at least once a year by winding it completely in and out. That recommendation is written in the tape manufacturers' preserving guide.
It will also prevent edge deterioration.

Kari
I started it to ask for opinions on rack mount intel servers to use as a base for mostly hecnet stuff.

If it's a quad core it's a core2 arch xeon. P4 (Pentium-D) only came in

Gents... Fun as all the small talk is, this is getting a little much outside of hecnet stuff, isn't it?

It's iffy... Since we're discussing a host where a SIMH-11 VAX might run with a HECnet connection.
Besides, Sampa started it. (Sorry about throwing you under the bus)
