Fred, DEC tends over-engineer things so possibly one fan may work provided the box is not loaded with disks. The VS4k series were designed for 5400 rpm disks and not for 7200 rpm or faster running disks. My solution would be to put storage in an external cabinet.
You could try and apply e little graphite powder in the noisy fan bearing, better yet use a molybdenium based lubricant: these do not conduct electricity.
I haven't opened my VS4000-x0's for year and cannot recall what the powersupplies look like, sorry.

Verzonden: 18 november 2011 14:13
Good morning ...
Subject mostly says it all. One of the fans in my VS4K 90A is noisy. I'd
like to replace it. (actually both) Two questions arise:
How the **** do I get the fans out of the power supply? I've got the
power supply out (that's easy), mostly apart (that's not so easy) but do
not seem to see any screws on the fans.
Would it be safe to run it with just one (quiet) fan?
Any pointers or links would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred

Lets call it for what it is - "legacy" is a term that people use in a
polite but derogatory manner to imply that the future direction they
prefer is not that which they view as the current direction.

Hmm. Area 44 don't seem to be online...
Anyway, I just tried setting host from one RSX system to another, and running phone on the remote system, and it works fine.
Not sure exactly what you saw, however one point to make is that unless you are in a conversation, you are already at the % prompt, and typing % will do nothing.
Also, ^Z should get you out of phone on RSX anyway.

What did not work was PHONE though. What I typed in on a local ALpha did
show up on MIM but I couldn't type into MIM's PHONE panel.
Hitting % didn't get me to the % prompt to exit PHONE on MIM.
The only way to log off was to disconnect by hitting ^Y twice at this end...

The bridge was stopped and started several times. My outside IP address is:
87.209.50.192
It worked flawlessly and neither the bridge nor its host have been changed or modified. -s usr1 just shows local mac and decnet addresses.
It points to psilo.update.uu.se:4711

Nope. Could you try kicking your bridge? Also, what address do you have?

I know the following addresses:
MIM mim.update.uu.se
CTAKAH rsx.pdp-11.nsk.ru
CTEPBA rsx.pdp-11.nsk.ru:2023 (currently down)
Thanks. Telnet is indeed much better. But it is a little ironic that
it is
better to use Telnet than DECnet to access a node on HECnet. :-)
Part of the reason is that when you use telnet, you are actully going
through E11, which simulates a normal DH11 serial port towards the
PDP-11. So you seem (to the PDP-11) to be sitting on a proper serial port.
Btw. Worth pointing out: the ber-cool command line editor ACD in RSX can only be used with the normal terminal driver. So - not usable through DECnet.
It is a piece of software I really should encourage all RSX-11M-PLUS users to check out...
(Although my list of stuff to spread to other RSX users are growing pretty long...)
