Could you try that in general on vms? I can rewrite the from line to that if it helps.

Hmm. I tested as well, and I did get the original mail back. Strange if that failed. I did
improve the logging to get the full error now though.
That said - congratulations. You just found out that google is violating rfc 5321. And the
really funny part is that their error message says that the source address is violating
rfc 5321. What rfc 5321 actually says is that only the host is allowed to have opinions
about the user part of a mail address, and so google have no busines trying to parse and
check that part.
Time to write a mail to postmaster at google, but I suspect we will be ignored.
For now, I think there is nothing more I can do. :-(

Many ISPs won't let you talk SMTP yourself, but you are expected to use
their mailer as a relay. Might that be what you are seeing?

More like the attachment has a file type that gmail considers an executable.
Just rename to .CXX or .EXX
Way hard to tell from just us talking like this. It could be any number of

to a HECnet address using gmail, and gmail is refusing the user part with
the colons. Quoting it made it go through, but it never arrived at the
destination...

It does indeed work to my VAX/VMS system, sending to "enkidu::phiber"@
mim.update.uu.se from gmail.
Something odd with my TOPS-20 mail setup on GLGMSH, it assumes ALL mail is
Internet mail, and doesn't seem to know what to do with a DECnet style mail
address. That's a separate issue, not related to your mail gateway.
By the way, if I try to run MAIL on MIM at the moment, it gives me an error:
$ mail
Sorry, no mail reader yet.
It used to work just fine...

Not sure exactly what my problem was. But as it was stuck on Mim I
realized that my error handling on the MAIL11 side was not good, so
I redesigned and expanded on it, and somehow that solved the problem
with your mail as well... (or so I think.)

decided was wrong. Try the command "SEND" instead, which does just the
mail sending.
(It can also take two arguments: 1) A short text, and 2) an address, at
which point it will just immediately send that short text.)

I found an old message by MRC where he says that he separated out DECnet
mail server functionality from his TOPS-20 MMAILR because it didn't work
right, and created a standalone MAISER to handle DECnet mail only, leaving
MMAILR to handle Internet mail only. Anyone here know the details of this?

How about reading mail sent to MIM? I'm pretty sure I've read test
e-mails that I've sent to MIM, using MAIL on MIM.
Currently I just put them all in a text file in DU:[1,7], so look for a
file named as your UIC in that directory. You can read it with MORE or
TYPE, or whatever.

Yes, I remembered it was SMTDCN, which is the DECnet mailserver analog of
SMTJFN, the TCP/IP mail server. I run SMTJFN right now with no problems.
But I can't seem to find any information on making SMTDCN work...
