My page uses a data file that is over 10 years out of date. It even needs updates for my
area as SAVAGE is now an Alpha. It would be easy to add data to the file. Plotting it on
a map would take real effort. It would also be interesting to track when a node was last
seen online. Putting something together with a RDB backend would be fun.

I tried to reply to this with an svg attachment, the result of me parsing out the results
from a series of NCP TELL xxxx SHOW KNOWN CIRC STAT and turning it into a graph.
It doesn't appear to have propagated. It sent ok.

This immensely powerful (and free) software allows one to connect to GIS
servers, like WMS servers, which are the industry standard method for
publshing GIS data. Really the best way to do this (IMO) is to set up a
WMS server to serve the map data for HECnet. That way, anyone can
overlay it on any mapping system that speaks WMS, which is pretty much
all of them.
And it would be friggin' COOL.
Warning, if you've never heard of QGIS, and if you go grab it and
start farting around with it, you will fall down a very deep rabbit
hole. There are WMS servers everywhere, for every kind of global data
and map that you can imagine, and it's an incredible piece of software.

regular basis? I have cities for a fair part of the nodes in HECnet. No
exact coordinates, though.
And then I don't have a current view of all links, but that could
possibly be somewhat extracted through NCP. But then, that would then
also required that you could makes lines or arches between two points...
And of course, I only have all of this under RSX. Looks like this is
using Google drive, which I think it could be a bit too complicated to
access from RSX. Someone with VMS who wants to give it a shot? :-)

You can allegedly do all kinds of things - draw lines, add text, change the colors of
the pins, add annotations, etc.

Google Earth Studio is fascinating too. You apply for the beta for
educational/personal use, and they approve you for access within a
business day. It is an animation tool, a lot of it will be familiar to
users of Daz 3D for example.

I saw in the Gramps code that there are Python APIs for the various maps (Google,
OpenStreetMap, others). Haven't tried them. Would be entertaining to have a PyDECnet
helper app to make these maps. I'd first have to get the client session API
implemented for that, but that's on the list anyway.
