Gentlepeople,
I've added a map maker to PyDECnet, which is now on-line on HECnet. It currently
refreshes once every 24 hours, showing locations and paths between the locations. You can
hover over the location markers to see nodes that have been recently observed, or click on
the markers to see all nodes whether observed or not. Clicking on the connecting arcs
will tell you which nodes have connections on that path.
The map is here: http://akdesign.dyndns.org:8080/map
You can also see a tabular display of the data collected by the network scanner, at
http://akdesign.dyndns.org:8080/map/data . Right now that link isn't shown, I'll
add that.

Code is checked in, if you want to see how it's done. The core code is in mapper.py,
just about 1000 lines. Well, there is of course the Leaflet package, which is quite a
large body of Javascript. I don't know Javascript at all, beyond what I had to learn
to interface to it, which was quite easy and well documented.

As I've also told Paul in private, I this is really great. It's been on
my wish-list for many years, but have not always been so easy to figure
out how to do. Paul did some impressive work on PyDECnet, and now added
this, making it really nice! Thanks a lot.
I hope people can look at it and be a bit impressed on how far HECnet
spreads out. And of course, there is also the possibility for people to
see if they might benefit from getting some links up in cases where they
can see that they are really connected though some odd place from their
point of view.
And to just briefly also give a bit of tech information. The positional
data is extracted from the nodename database I have on Mim, so if people
spot they are placed wrong, or out in the south Atlantic, all you need
to do is give me a better position, and I'll update the nodename
database, and you will magically be corrected on the map as well (within
a day or a week, depending on how often the generated map is updated).

Probably the issue is becouse DECNET is not started or no license PAK for UCX/DECNET.
Try $ start/network decnet
Decnet is started in a COM file, located: sys$manager:vmstartup_vms.com
(somewhere at the bottom of the file)
start decnet manualy and then go with citcuits...

The NET0 device is created when you start DECnet - it has nothing to do with Multinet.
You need to make sure the "START/NETWORK DECNET" line in your SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM
file comes before you try to start up Multinet.

"START/NETWORK DECNET" line in your SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM file comes before you try
to start up Multinet.

When I helped Ales set up his DECnet over a multinet TCP/IP connection, I gave him an
additional .COM file to be executed (by systartup_vms) after the
@....multinet...startup.com line. This was to bypass the multinet:decnet-circuits.com file
which overwrites circuits configured by multinet commands and whose defaults are useless.
Within that procedure, I had commented out the loading of the tcpdriver because that is
done by multinet:decnet-circuits.com but ONLY when you have previously had some circuits
defined. So, if you're using the separate command procedure solution and have never
defined any tcp circuits with multitnet commands, you will have to uncomment the line that
loads the driver. I think I probably caused more trouble than solving anything though I
find it more difficult to describe how multinet overwrites config files when it does so.
So, the second line is only commented out if multnet already loads tcpdriver.
$ SysGen:=$SysGen

When I helped Ales set up his DECnet over a multinet
TCP/IP connection, I gave him an additional .COM file to be executed (by systartup_vms)
after the @....multinet...startup.com line. This was to bypass the
multinet:decnet-circuits.com file which overwrites circuits configured by multinet

Within that procedure, I had commented out the loading of the tcpdriver because that is

The NET0 device is created when
you start DECnet - it has nothing to do with Multinet. You need to make sure the
"START/NETWORK DECNET" line in your SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM file comes before you try

This was my thought also. I never imagined when I was younger that I'd
have these systems that (back then) were large, expensive, accessed over
56k lines, and most certainly not allowed to touch/access to the machine
room.
To say nothing of if I didn't do "tech" for a living, how much my home
network would cost in labor. I'd never be able to afford the initial
setup nor maintenance.

@Johnny, Area 34 could better be localized in B?tbyggartorp (59.521926, 17.847988) if You
would have the time to update the database so we don't just cluster everything
belonging to Stockholm in one dot. I'd really like to have ROLL's PDP-10 in my
shed, but It wasn't there last time I looked :)
If I could put in a request for future development it would be to add support to other
kinds of links if possible as Area34 currently only connects to other peers via tunneled
ip/gre links.

You don't mention what you're using for pcap on your system.
Is it WinPcap? Is it Npcap? If, Npcap is it the latest version?
The selection of your MAC address may or may not matter
depending on if you've got either DECnet or VMS Clustering
configured on the VAX system.
Beyond this, it also seems that you have possibly configured
MultiNet with the same IP address as your host system.
I recommend starting with a Wired network setup before
trying Wireless. Depending on what you're trying to do,
you may have success with the wireless setup if you use
NAT. If you use NAT, you should ALSO configure
MultiNet with a completely different network address
than the network being used by your WiFi network.

I'll try to answer a number of questions here.
First of all, some background on how it works. There are three parts: the node database,
the network scanner, and the map display maker.
The node database is read from MIM, it's basically the one you can see on the web
server (nodedb page). The code extracts name, node address, owner's name, name of the
node's location, and location latitude/longitude. This information is updated daily.
The network scanner looks at every node mentioned in the node database plus every node it
can see as reachable. Roughly speaking, it makes a NICE connection (remote network
management protocol) to each node, then asks it three questions: "show exec
characteristics", "show active circuits" and "show active nodes".
The first questions answers "what type of node is this" and also gets the node
name if we don't already know it. The other two give the adjacent nodes, i.e., the
connections from this node to its neighbors. Often but not always, that information
includes the node type of the adjacent nodes.
This process continues iteratively until information for all visible nodes has been
refreshed.
There are some optimizations and tricks. If a node is reported as reachable in the
"show active nodes" reply (whether as a neighbor or farther away) it's
recorded as reachable, even if I can't talk to it. This means that Phase II nodes,
Phase III nodes in another area, or Cisco routers will all be shown as reachable so long
as there is a node somewhere that answers NICE requests and shows them as reachable.
Also, for optimization, if a node reports a neighbor's type as Phase II or Phase III
(in another area) or endnode, I don't try to connect to it because I already have all
the information I want. This speeds up the scan. It also avoids a bug in DECnet/E where
"show active nodes" on an endnode leaves the request hanging after the reply
data is sent (the "no more data" message is missing).
At the completion of the scan, the up/down information is updated. Currently each node,
and each adjacency entry for that node, has three timestamps: last up, last down, and last
seen. DUring the scan, when a node is seen as visible, or when an adjacent node is
reported, that entry is marked with the current time as "last seen". When the
scan is finished, the entire database is examined. Any item not marked with the current
timestamp in "last seen" is currently down. If it was previously up (its
"last up" time is greater than its "last down") then "last
down" is set to the current time. Similarly, any item previously marked
"down" ("last down" greater than "last up") has its
"last up" set to the current time.
The map display takes as input the node and adjacent-node information collected by the
scanner and summarizes it in two steps. First, all the nodes are grouped by
latitude/longitude. Each distinct spot on the map is given a marker associated with all
the nodes at that location.
Next, all the circuits (adjacent node) information is examined, grouped by lat/long of the
endpoints. An arc on the map corresponds to all the connections between node pairs at the
location markers connected by that arc.
Now for the meaning of the colors.
Each item (node or circuit) has a "health" which is similar to its up/down
status. Right now, they are "faded", "down" and "up". Up
means I can see it right now. Down means it was seen before but isn't visible now.
Faded means either it has never been seen (this applies only to nodes) or it has been down
for more than two weeks. I've been thinking about adding a "warning"
status, which would be something like "it's up now but it has been bouncing
up/down a lot" but that isn't currently in the code.
Location markers and connection arcs both summarize multiple nodes and circuits. The
color used for these comes from the health of the components that go into them. For both,
if all elements are up, the color is green. If more than half are down, the color is red.
If some are down but more are up, the color is yellow. And if all are faded, the color
is gray. Oh yes, and if an arc has been seen in the past but has been down for 180 days,
it disappears (it won't be shown as gray anymore). Obviously you won't see that
for a while.
All location markers have a popup (window that appears when you click the marker) which
lists the nodes at that location, grouped by heath status (up in black, down in red, faded
in gray italics). That includes gray nodes (not seen). Exception: the default marker in
the south Atlantic omits gray nodes because there are too many. A location marker that
isn't gray also has a tool tip (appears when you hover over the marker) which lists
the up and down nodes only, not the faded ones.
Arcs also have popups, which list the individual circuits for this path by their end point
node names/numbers.
Map controls: the zoom in/out is at the top left. The button at the top right is the
layers tool, which lets you choose from a number of map sources, and also allows you to
turn on/off the location and/or path display.
As I mentioned, there is also a tabular display, sorted by node number, at /map/data.
I'll add a link to that on the map display. It will show you more detail than can
comfortably fit on the map itself.
By the way, the map images come from various map sources, such as OpenStreetMap. They all
use Mercator projection, and there isn't a convenient way to change that so I
haven't tried. The map machinery has some limitations (I'd be tempted to call
them bugs). For example, if you zoom way out you'll see the continents more than
once, which is proper, but the markers only appear on one copy. This is why the Australia
to USA links are not shown as proper great circle arcs; the program would not display them
sensibly. I suspect a hard core GIS tool would get this right, but those are a whole lot
harder to use and I have not attempted to do so.

Line #147 has my hack that tells me if anything is there, even if there
is no NML on that node (e.g.Cisco switches) or that node is a PHASE-V
node, etc.
People do not seem to mind the single odd MIRROR login failure from
account SANYAL every two weeks either. I have only had a couple of
emails asking about it.

That's fantastic. It most definitely beats my non-geographic attempt with Graphify or
whatever it was called.
I'd like to get to the bottom of the proxy problem though. In the end I reinstated a
default account for the NML object.
Without it, and the appropriate proxies in place, the VAXen here can NICE to each other
without a problem.
The proxy I added for your mapper didn't seem to work - and I still can't find a
definitive answer, just a vague recollection that is totally lacking in any useful
detail.

I've added a map maker to PyDECnet, which is now on-line on HECnet. It currently
refreshes once every 24 hours, showing locations and paths between the locations. You can
hover over the location markers to see nodes that have been recently observed, or click on
the markers to see all nodes whether observed or not. Clicking on the connecting arcs
will tell you which nodes have connections on that path.

Feedback would be welcome. There is no map legend yet. The button on the upper right is

you turn the location and/or path information on or off.
The default map is OpenStreetMap, and the mapping interface machinery is the Leaflet
package, a very nice and easy to use tool.
