Ultrix and Digital Unix are two completely unrelated things.
VAX and MIPS ran (run) Ultrix, while Alpha was Digital Unix/Tru64/OSF
whatever...
Ultrix is a bit awkward. It sits somewhere between 4.2BSD and 4.3BSD.
Some things are definitely old and you want to replace them as soon as
possible, other things are pretty decent. (Name resolver library pops up
in my head as something that was very antique).
Last version of Ultrix was 4.5, which was release in 1998 or so, as a
final update to make it somewhat Y2K acceptable.
The same base was used to build for both VAX and MIPS. However, a normal
distribution only contained object files and binaries, and was only
usable for the specific architecture you have it for, even if most
sources were shared.

In addition to Linux, you may wish to consider Digital's Ultrix product,
which had out of the box 'official' support for DECnet. I did a fair
amount of development on it and didn't find it to be any more
objectionable than Linux. It was a good platform to transition toother
Unix offerings, first SunOS and then your standard Linux flavor.
I don't remember what happened to the VAX platform version of Ultrix,
but I had thought it morphed into Digital Unix for the Alpha, which then
begat True64. We had Digital Unix on Alpha's in our data centers in the
mid-1990's and I have to say, for the time that was one wicked chip,
fast and 64 bits before a number of notable competitors.
If you are feeling like you may need another four bits, then there is a
fair amount of knowledge here on DECnet for Tops-10 and Tops-20, some
Tops-20 monitor internals level (which you are unlikely to need).

Thanks for everyone's messages, I'm
finally online with a
PyDECnet router at 1.870 and an OpenVMS x86 9.2-1 box at 1.871.
My plans include: a couple VAX/VMS boxes (under simh), perhaps an
Ubuntu 14 box, and who knows about TOPS-10, TOPS-20, and the PDP-11
systems :)
Also maybe joining some of the simh vaxxen to HNET if I manage to
understand NJE :)
Supratim, I think I was visiting one of the boxes in your lab, wrote a
MAIL message, but can't remember to which box, sorry. I am very
curious about DECnet support in older Linux versions, does it come out
of the box or is there some trickery involved?

I used to run OpenVMS 7.3 under simh on a Raspberry Pi, but have
never learnt
past the "newbie" stage about OpenVMS.
With the availability of the x86 Community Edition, I have now
9.2-1 running
under Proxmox at home, and thought "maybe it's time
to learn about DECnet and join the HECnet".
So here I am, with exactly 0 idea of how DECnet works but the
intention to
read some of the docs and figure it out enough to
join a node or two (or more?)
Once you decide how to connect to HECnet, please reach out to Johnny
Bilquist (via this mailing list or bqt(a)softjar.se) for next steps.
Typically you will be assigned to one of the HECnet areas based on
proximity and the owner of that Area will then assign DECnet
addresses
to you for your machines.
Presently many people are using DECnet/Python to uplink to HECnet,
most
commonly using MULTINET over TCP as the DECnet-over-IP mechanism.
