I wonder too. The DEC standard answer would be an "NCP loop node foo" command,
which is an application protocol but a simple one (mirror, object 25).
The ping command that he illustrated is from IOS on a Cisco router.
Ok, then
it's anyone's guess what it does; Cisco doesn't really understand DECnet or
know how to read the specs. It would be informative to capture a packet trace showing
what was sent and received.
Seems to work pretty well here, and has for the better part of thirty years, for me.
If I get any desk time soon I'll see if I can capture some traces for you.
