I wonder too. The DEC standard answer would be an "NCP loop node foo" command,
which is an application protocol but a simple one (mirror, object 25).
I think I've seen a ping somewhere. "dnping" in Linux? It seemed to be
something lower level, like an NSP message that would trigger a response from the
destination node but not rely on any specific application object number being recognized.
Perhaps a data message sent to an unused logical link number? That would produce a
"no link terminate" disconnect-confirm message.
