For some (strange) reason your MicroVAX ROM decided not to output the above
two messages but to consider every byte as an error message number, and to
output the corresponding error message identification.
Could be that the install was done on a MicroVAX 3100 and I tried to boot
it in a VAXstation 4000/60.
THat should make no difference. If it's a SCSI drive that can be read and
written by both systems, it should work with one caveat -- the VMS version
on the disk much be able to support the vintage of the VAX upon which the
boot is performed. Check this chart for minimum VMS suport for particular
VMS supported systems.

I don't have a spare terminal server to toss at it so I'm trying to think

I suspect what is happening is that the computer is treating the cable
disconnect as a 'break' which then will drop it to the console prompt.
That makes sense. I can test that tomorrow by flipping the "break enable"
switch. Don't feel like heading downstairs to boot the MVII right now.
I do want to eventually swap the KA630 for a KA650/KA655/KA660 though.

Would anybody have a VAXBI transition header that they could spare? I need a second one to install a KDB50 in my 8350. This is the little plastic connector that screws onto the BI backplane and allows ribbon cables to be connected.
The KDB50 actually needs two transition headers (it has two boards). One has the SDI cables attached that one I actually have, believe it or not, but then there s also a second header needed for the second board. This second one just has four headers that connect to four tiny ribbon cables that connect to the header for the first board.
I d guess that this second header is the same as the ones used on the DMB32 and other BI options, but I can t say for sure.
If anybody can spare one, the 8350 will love you forever J

Bob Armstrong

If cleaning the memory boards works, I can tell you for sure in a day or
two...gotta wait for them to appropriately dry.
(They were toast anyway...battery seems to have corroded them somehow to
get them stuck in a loop.)
Maybe that disk is not a bootable one and/or contains a corrupted volume which
has fouled some MicroVAX ROM routine. So it's very likely that those two error
messages are not relevant or correct, and most of all they cannot be trusted.
I figured as much. There is a dka700:[sys0] on the disk.

Mounting it succeeded. It seems it was just a user data disk.
Unfortunately, what I assume to be the OS drive from the 3100 has failed.

I don't know whether or not to assume it's a corrupted FIELS-11 volume,
one without system files, or a bad disk.
If you translate into ASCII characters the hexadecimal values at the beginning
of every error message you've received, you get the following:
%SYSBOOT-W-System ROM version less than minimum required for VMS
%SYSBOOT-E-Unable to locate file PKCDRIVER.EXE
For some (strange) reason your MicroVAX ROM decided not to output the above
two messages but to consider every byte as an error message number, and to

Boot a known good VMS disk.
Show device dk and see what comes back.
If that succeeds, then try a mount/over=id of this disk.
If that succeeds, then analyze/disk/read.
If that succeeds, then analyze/disk/read/repair.
