Hi folks. I am trying to do a sysgen of RSX11M v4.6 on a PDP-11/34A
with two RL02s, from the RL distribution. I'm trying to get a system
running before VCF-East, for which I'm loading my truck in two days. I
also have a lot of other work to do for my exhibit, so the problems I'm
having with this sysgen are causing me heartburn.
This is real hardware, not an emulator.
It is stopping at seemingly random points, the most recent being
during RSXASM. At least I'm pretty sure it had stopped at different
points the first two times I did it.
I get 'Task "...MAC" terminated, T-bit trap or BPT execution' and a
register dump.
This is going to tank a big part of my exhibit. Can anyone help me
get past this? I last did an RSX11M sysgen probably 25 years ago; I
don't consider myself to be well-versed in this anymore.

That is not an obvious problem. I wonder if you have hardware problems?
The only other "obvious" thing would be memory. How much memory do you
have in the system, and is something more running at the same time?

of packs and started a sysgen.
Do you really suspect hardware? I have an XXDP pack that I can boot
up, but I am so short of time...even slogging through the XXDP
documentation will take half the night.

SYSGEN? If you run RMD, what can you see sitting in memory?
I'm running the baseline system. I am booting the "BL" disk in DL0:,
with "EXCPRV" in DL1:. I have made three attempts, so there are files
around from previous sysgens, but I answered "Y" when I'm asked if I
want sysgen to clean those up. I haven't done anything else on these
packs; I created them from disk images this afternoon.
I have started another attempt; I assume it will crash in the same
manner in a few minutes. When it does, I will run RMD and let you know
what else is hanging around.

Yes, it is. And T-bit is when the T-bit in the PSW is set. That is how
debuggers single step code. So T-bit and BPT are very much just two
sides of the same coin.

Oh yes, that is ringing a bell now. I see how it makes no sense for
that to be happening here.

I thought that was the case, but I wasn't sure. BPT is breakpoint
trap, isn't it?? Ok. Memory shortage is the one thing I can imagine
could cause something
like this. If a program runs out of memory, the programmer could just
have thrown a BPT in there as a way of crashing out.
Otherwise I'm not coming up with any good ideas here...

a sysgen. That certainly wasn't unusual in datacenters in the 1970s and
1980s! ;)
I just don't want Yet Another PDP-11 Running RT-11. RT-11 is great
for testing out a new machine, but it just doesn't DO very much, and
it's what everyone assumes every PDP-11 is running.
My current sysgen attempt has reached the RSXASM stage. I am walking
very gently around the racks..

Dave,
Try the RSTS/E install on the 11/34. If you can, try the RSX-11M build on the 11/44. If
RSTS/E fails then it is probably hardware. If RSX-11M fails then it is probably the
distribution media.

I can't; the 11/34 doesn't have enough disk to do a RSTS/E install.
Two RL02s don't cut it for v10.1. I could trim it down and redistribute
stuff across the disks, but that would take a day of work, which I don't
have time for. :-(

Does this mean you're managed to arrange circumstances to flow in the
right (or wrong) direction for next weekend? That's perfect.
Of course I'd give one of a good friend's lives to be able to have an
exhibit there, but that's for next year or the following.
Besides there's a good reason why your SC-40 refuses to boot, and its
not my favorite example........ [Ask offlist please.]
