The 1287A was a replacement for a Moto part used in the IBM PC: There is an app note on
how to replace it, which is what made me look at the DS1687.

Dallas semi says the 1687 is SW compatible with the 1287A which I think is what you need
to care about and then maybe a little HW hacking, although it looks fairly close. Needs
to check any timing differences and the name of the RW/WR pin is different - but they
