I've way rusty on VMS, so I figured someone here can probably give me an
answer way faster than I can figure it out myself.
I brought SIGGE:: online two days ago. (VAX 7000-720). Started YCPIP
services as well. Now the disk is full. I'm guessing some logging
somewhere, as people are crazy about probing and poking. TELNET stopped
working, but I can log in fine from DECnet or LAT.
Can anyone tell me where logs go, and how to clean it up so I free some
disk.
Also, are there some known issue with the telnet server? If I telnet to
the machine, it's just constantly spewing out one character. Probably 0xff.

I have plenty on MIM where I can see what the stupid script kiddies are
doing.
(The ultimate irony is the scripts that probe telnet, which just hang
when they connect to RSX, as RSX do not prompt for any username. RSX
gives you an MCR prompt when logged out, and you can give any command.
And my telnet daemon actually gives you instructions on how to log in to
the machine, including a username and password, and the scripts all fail
at giving the script kiddie an account on the machine for the simple
fact that it don't heave like Unix, and noone ever sees my welcome
message. :-) )

Johnny, access to patches is difficult these days. For VAX / VMS use the HP hobbyist
program. Besides PAK's John Egolf, who runs it, will provide you with usercode
passwords for the latest kits. V7.3 hasn't changed much do you'll be up to date.

Something like:
$ PURGE SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000...]*.*LOG*;
After that you might like to use something like DFU to locate large
files. You can pick DFU up here:
http://www.digiater.nl/downloads.html

I'm not too sure. Which version of TCP/IP are you using?

You might want to have a l?ook at the size of accountng.dat (9 characters for the filename
;). It's in sys$manager or sys$system.
If that is too big try $set acc?/ new and move the old version off sys$sysdevice:.
Next have a look at the ?*.dmp files, if you have decservers.

Johnny, yes I think you can safely move it to another disk. You might set the sysgen
parameter that forces (scaled down) dumps to be written in the swapfile though. (how large
are page- & swapfile each btw?).

Decservers may force dump files at ?other stages than boot time but usually on their boot
host. Which is most likely a pdp-11 when around ;-)

If you have a batch queue running you could run a script that purges the
log files you don't want periodically, something like:

I've actually got a script just like this that purges EVERYTHING and sets the max
version limit to 5 on all disks.

Any purge operation should probably have the "/keep=" qualifier added. I

I might as well give the full hardware setup at Update, as there are
probably more people around amused by this.
Update have one 7000-720 and one 8650 in the computer hall, in addition
to one PDP-11/70. (There are also other machines around, but mostly PC
stuff, and some SUN).
The PDP-11/70 is MAGICA:: (Magica.Update.UU.SE), which I also brought up
two days ago. Magica have 3.5 meg of memory, ethernet, 4xRA73, RL02,
RX02, TU81, RK05. We should probably throw in an RK07 as well, and it
also have three massbuses. We have RP06, RP07, TU77 and TU78, but they
are not in the hall. But it's possible to hook things up if needed.
The VAX-8650 have 60 Meg of memory, one SBI, one CI, two Unibuses,
ethernet, DMF-32 and two UDA-50. It has 8xRA73 hooked up for NetBSD, and
boots over CI for other software. It can run as Krille.Update.UU.SE
(NetBSD or VMS), or Zeke.Update.UU.SE (Ultrix)
The 7000-720 have two CPUs (obviously) and 1.25 Gig of memory. It have
ethernet and CI.
On the CI we also have HSJ40 controllers. We have a large storage works
cabinet, which actually have six HSJ40 setup as three redundant pairs.
Each pair have six shelves, and each shelve can fit six storage works
bricks. So we could (in theory) have 108 disks connected.
But in reality we only have 12 disks. We have a VMS distribution CD

somewhere, as people are crazy about probing and poking. TELNET stopped
working, but I can log in fine from DECnet or LAT.
Can anyone tell me where logs go, and how to clean it up so I free some
disk.
Also, are there some known issue with the telnet server? If I telnet to
the machine, it's just constantly spewing out one character. Probably 0xff.

bricks. So we could (in theory) have 108 disks connected.
But in reality we only have 12 disks. We have a VMS distribution CD

A long time ago I replaced an 11/750 with an 8650. Users were initially ecstatic but soon
grumbled that they lost several 20 min coffee breaks because even the slowest transaction
on the 8650 was completed under 2 minutes.
What I can remember of. 6000 model 4000 was that it had a fast XMI bus that held
cpu's, memory, fast controllers (ci and the kdm?) and connected to the BI bus(ses)
that held the slower controllers.
The 7000 didn't have that? I know that the 7000 was "alpha ready", which I
think was a box swap.

Both quite expensive boxes at the time. The 7000 was rated at a little over 60 VUPS,

clear to me. I have been all around inside both of those machines and
have seen no difference, other than the design of the card ejector
handles. (which are interchangeable)

Depends on which 7000 we're talking about. The -600, -700 or -800. The

Um. Not really. The Alpha version of that machine was the DEC 7000,
which was identical, except you had CPU cards with Alphas instead of
NVAX on them. All other things were identical. However, some of the
cards on the LSB (or if it was XMI) used different firmware if used by
an Alpha or a VAX. And some options (like the SCSI controller) was Alpha
only.
The 8400 is the next gemeration of this stuff.

It's similar, but laid out differently inside. The CPU and memory are on
a but which I thinkg is called the laser bus. You then have XMI and
possibly VAXBI as well.
I'm trying to remember, but I think both CI and Ethernet sits on XMI,
but it might be that they also sits on VAXBI, which sits on XMI...

Well, no. The computer club is at Uppsala University. And they are
friendly. People are welcome to visit, just let us know beforehand.
I've always liked the 8650, neat piece of
equipment. Never seen a VAX 7000 ?in my life, they're similar in appearance to a 6000?
I love the 86x0 machines. Wonderful engineering. The 7000 looks pretty
much the same as a 6000 on the outside. They are different when you open
them up, though.

I might as well give the full hardware setup at Update, as there are
probably more people around amused by this.
Update have one 7000-720 and one 8650 in the computer hall, in addition
to one PDP-11/70. (There are also other machines around, but mostly PC
stuff, and some SUN).
The PDP-11/70 is MAGICA:: (Magica.Update.UU.SE), which I also brought up
two days ago. Magica have 3.5 meg of memory, ethernet, 4xRA73, RL02,
RX02, TU81, RK05. We should probably throw in an RK07 as well, and it
also have three massbuses. We have RP06, RP07, TU77 and TU78, but they
are not in the hall. But it's possible to hook things up if needed.
The VAX-8650 have 60 Meg of memory, one SBI, one CI, two Unibuses,
ethernet, DMF-32 and two UDA-50. It has 8xRA73 hooked up for NetBSD, and
boots over CI for other software. It can run as Krille.Update.UU.SE
(NetBSD or VMS), or Zeke.Update.UU.SE (Ultrix)
The 7000-720 have two CPUs (obviously) and 1.25 Gig of memory. It have
ethernet and CI.
On the CI we also have HSJ40 controllers. We have a large storage works
cabinet, which actually have six HSJ40 setup as three redundant pairs.
Each pair have six shelves, and each shelve can fit six storage works
bricks. So we could (in theory) have 108 disks connected.
But in reality we only have 12 disks. We have a VMS distribution CD
dumped on one. We have an Ultrix system which uses two disks, and we
have two different VMS disks. One for a cluster, where both the 7000 and
the 8650 have separate systems, and one for the standalone VMS running
on the 8650, if we want that. We also have a HSC90 in storage, and a few
more racks of RA92 disks (and some other RA disks as well.)
The rest of the disks we're not using at the moment. I don't remember
exactly what model of SCSI disks we have. But they are approximately 2
Gig each.
We've spent the last week cleaning things up, reconnecting everything,
and fixing various issues. So now all this hardware is running. Which is
why you can also see that MAGICA:: is back online. We'll see if we can
keep the stuff running for now.
(There is more fun stuff in our storage, but I won't bore you with it,
nor to mention what we've had to throw away over the years... :-( )

I've way rusty on VMS, so I figured someone here can probably give me an
answer way faster than I can figure it out myself.
I brought SIGGE:: online two days ago. (VAX 7000-720). Started YCPIP
services as well. Now the disk is full. I'm guessing some logging
somewhere, as people are crazy about probing and poking. TELNET stopped
working, but I can log in fine from DECnet or LAT.
Can anyone tell me where logs go, and how to clean it up so I free some
disk.
Also, are there some known issue with the telnet server? If I telnet to
the machine, it's just constantly spewing out one character. Probably 0xff.

Forgot to comment the last thing. An upgrade from a VAX 7000 to a DEC
7000 consisted of just replacing the CPU board.
And Update used to have a DEC 7000 as well. It went in the dumpster many
years ago now. :-(

had -600 CPUs when
we got it, but we upgraded them to -700. We might have a single -800 CPU
that we could get (was offered to us several years ago), but it's also
fun to run SMP... Now, if someone were to offer us two -800 CPUs...

Oh yes, man they are FAST. Mine has two -700 CPUs which are pretty
quick...but the -800s smoke them.

True. The 8650 wins both the air moving competition and the power
consumption competition. a -2060 would probably beat it on power,
though. But we don't have space for the -2060 in the computer room...

Am I right in thinking that the GS60e requires 3 phase at European
voltages whereas the GS60 can just about run from a 13 amp circuit?
There was the possibility of a GS60e going here at one time - I'd be
interested in what folks thought about whether it would be worth the
time and commitment to get it, run it. Unfortunately 3 phase would be a
problem for me here.
