Hello,
I have a license for openvms and an old openvms file. It's been so long
I can't remember how to get the license into the simulator and simulated
OS and apply it. If I can figure out how to do that I will try to get a
C compiler and some TCP/IP things into the VMS.
??? Does anyone know where I can get some help loading the license. I
seem to remember creating a ISO filewith the license in it and changing
some attribs in VMS.

I've done it two ways -- the iso create and bring it in via CDROM drive
-- or just cut and paste at the console to get TCP/IP and FTP up and
bring the file in via ftp over the network.
I don't remember the RMS attributes that needed changing.

The attribs you need to change are right in the hobbyist license e-mail.

Oh. Ok I don't remember getting anything with the license in the email,
except the license. Ok well I will look around some. I remember a : that

I checked my email and this is what it says:
An alternate way people get files onto their server or emulated server is
to either create your own iso
image file with the files you want to transfer. If you do this, there
is a good chance the OpenVMS file
attributes will be lost on your Windows (or Linux) system. To
compensate for this, copy the files onto
your OpenVMS disk (from the iso) and set the attributes:

OK yes. I looked my license over and I didn't see this anywhere on it.
Something must've came with the license I didn't look over. If so my
mistake but I can't remember anything. Hum.

In the early days, I remember configuring the card reader for SIMH VAX, attaching it to
the COM file containing the licences from HP Hobbyist.
From the VMS prompt, I copied the card reader device to
a local file then executed it to install all of the licences.
Having said that, a copy/paste into your PUTTY window that?s running a CREATE will work on
OPA0:

The license was on paper. And Dave Cutler designed all this, before
going to Microsoft? I have been dealing with linux and unix a bit. but I
have noticed a Compiler and TCP/IP for VMS and a GUI. Well they are
really cranking VMS up, anything better than windows. But, that's what
people use.

Of course. Do you find this surprising? VMS had a GUI thirty years
ago, and TCP/IP even before that. And compilers for a long list of
languages many years before that.
But, that's what people use.
I don't know where you hang out, but I think about 5% of the people I
know use Windows, all of whom have plans to dump it. And certainly none
of the hardcore technical people I know use it. I myself have never
used it...I'm not a patient person and I have real work to do.

No, it's not true now, and hasn't been for thirty years. My main
desktop system in 1989 was a VAX with a 19" monitor running a GUI, and
it was far from an unusual configuration. VAXen had GUIs even a few
years before that.
If I master TCP/IP on VMS next is DECnet.
Bravo. DECnet is a nice protocol suite. Which brings this back
on-topic. =)

You move in technical circles and perhaps in the US things are different....
But at risk of falling out with you again can I say that in the UK almost every local
government user desktop is windows.
I don't think I have ever encountered a Linux desktop in the UK in local government.
The odd Apple machine where Desktop publishing was needed, but no Linux.
Almost every desktop PC in the UK health Service (the NHS) runs MS Windows. I must admit I
have only worked in three schools (and been a governor in one) but again all Windows
desktops.
There is some Linux on things like Raspberry PIs for Python but not for admin/teaching
There is a lot more Linux in the back office. So in Stockport Council we had around 250
windows server images (and again most councils are similar) but ran a Linux farm for
running MOODLE and a couple of Linux servers for Oracle for some of the social care apps.

manager told them what tools to use to do their jobs, and they didn't

Solaris and HP-UX used to have a big footprint in this business, but
it's almost all gone at this point.

I thought Android was written in Java or maybe Javascript. Jim Gosling
wrote Java and there is JRE for (at one time) solaris and there is for
Windows and Linux.
And earlier when I mentioned VMS I meant and DEC and their machines
PDP-11 and VAX.

Hello!
Take the publishing trades. My father ran several typesetting houses,
he even did the day to day management for his father my grandfather
and they owned a hotmetal shop. That means Linotype. And eventually
moved towards photo and with them went computers. The programs ran on
both a Nova 2 and then a Nova 3, finally an Eclipse. Eventually the
trade went desktop which was on a Mac using Quark. Now look where we
are.
I have a book on programming in the MS-DOS (!!) world, it was also
done desktop. But the program was the same from the Novas and the
Eclipse, rewritten for the PC. Sadly it never took off.

You'll need to install the VAX-VMS and DVNETEND PAKs to get it talking
via DECnet, then any other license PAKs can be transferred. Just typing
in those two PAKs is easy.
You can copy/paste them from the terminal, but if you try it all at
once you'll hit a buffer overflow. To address that, edit
SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT and add the following lines:
MIN_TTY_TYPAHDSZ=4096
MIN_TTY_ALTYPAHD=4096
...then do:
$ SET DEFAULT SYS$UPDATE
$ @AUTOGEN GETDATA REBOOT NOFEEDBACK
After the system comes back up, log in again, then you can paste in
much larger chunks without issues.

I have a license for openvms and an old openvms file. It's been so long
I can't remember how to get the license into the simulator and simulated
OS and apply it. If I can figure out how to do that I will try to get a
C compiler and some TCP/IP things into the VMS.

openvms73.iso backup.
The latest code provides more robust/consistent behavior for simulators
when the simulator user interacts with it. In this particular case, the
complete disk image is created at attach time instead of having it
arbitrarily grow while the simulator is actually running. Arbitrary
expansion of the disk image while the simulator is busy executing
instructions can create crazy errors if/when the host system runs
out of disk space. It is best to find this out at attach time rather at
some random time later. This approach also supports subsequent
automatic disk type/size detection when you happen to restart the
simulator later. You'll now notice that later attach operations of
VMS (and most other OS disk images) will announce the disk label
and it's file system size when you attach a disk that has a ODS1,
ODS2, RT11, Ultrix partition table, on it.
Feel free to report any problems or other irregularities you may
observe.

your message. I meant the binary, the compiled executable, now prints these things you

VMS commands are prefixed with "$ ". Both are the default prompts

1) Extract the license files from the email you received
and save them somewhere in your local file system
(say Hobbyist-USE-ONLY-VA.TXT and Hobbyist-USE-ONLY-I64.TXT)
2) Start the VAX simulator and enter this command:
sim> ATTACH TQ -F ANSI-VMS Hobbyist-*
??? The command above Mark does not
seem to work on my VMS at all. I
can get it to accept this, att tq -F FIXED vmst? /* vmst is a rename of the
Hobbyist VA.TXT
license, tried the original name it didn't work either */
I don't know
where you got the source code you've compiled into
the simulator, and you've not show the output of:
sim> SHOW VERSION
The latest simh code is available at https://github.com/simh/simh
which is a git repository. If you want a zip download, that can be
had from https://github.com/simh/simh/archive/master.zip
3) Boot
VMS and login on the console and then execute the following
commands:
> $ MOUNT/OVER=ID MUA0:
> $ @MUA0:Hobbyist-USE-ONLY-VA.TXT $ @MUA0:VMST.
Note the trailing period will be required since it seems you renamed
the "Hobbyist-USE-ONLY-VA.TXT" file "vmst"
??? The OS request I mount the following name,
mount /over=id _BUC$MUA0:? /* That it takes but it doesn't work */
Ha I am stumped here. I can't remember what all the $ and : mean. And
the [] I think mean directory. The numbers after ; I remember are
version numbers and that's what purge is for.
Like, above where I prefixed
simulator commands with "sim> ", the
VMS commands are prefixed with "$ ". Both are the default prompts
from the respective environments.
