As some people have noticed the last few months, MIM have been difficult
to reach.
It has come to the point where I just have to move the machine to a new
place, as I'm not having much success solving the current situation.
For people who maybe don't know, Mim is a PDP-11/74 (simulated) which
runs RSX-11M+. It is kindof a hub for Hecnet, as well as a resource for
anyone who wants to find documentation or information about RSX, and
also to find various software for RSX.
I will move Mim this weekend, and so it will be down for a while.
Hopefully this will be a fairly smooth operation, but I'll let people
know when it's going on, and my expectation is that it shouldn't be more
than a couple of hours.
Mim will also change address and name because of this. The new address
to reach Mim on will be Mim.SoftJAR.SE. This name should be stable for
the forseeable future. Physically Mim will move from Sweden to the US
east cost, and be living at LSSM. A big thank you to LSSM and Dave
McGuire in particular for helping out with resources for this.
In practice, for everyone else, once the move is done, it means that:
. Any reference to Mim.Stupi.NET needs to be changed to Mim.SoftJAR.SE.
. Any multinet circuits connecting to Mim should adjust their costs. See
the HECnet information page on Mim about this.
. I will also create a new PyDECnet node at LSSM to act as another

I just got CBVRP3 connected to HECnet again via HECnet.softjar.com
<http://hecnet.softjar.com/> at my designated port.
I noticed that the connection is now to 1.1022 PyHEC instead of 1.1023 ANKE so they
will want to update their local node database to reflect this to get routing to MIM and
other nodes working correctly.

Hi.
Yes, since I initially was thinking that I'd keep ANKE up, I assigned a
new name to this node. But I realized that the limitations in
connectivity from Stupi makes it a bad idea to keep ANKE up, so I could
possibly rename PyHEC to ANKE, or come up with some other name as well...
I have basically one remaining problem on MIM right now. It's not
catastrophic, but DNS is working very badly, and this is something that
will require a bit more work. But otherwise all is doing very well.
And now I can see a fair number of links have come up as well, so things
are starting to look nice. Next thing is to figure out better costs on
things.

We have excellent connectivity here, but it's not sitting idle. ;)
It will vary a lot with time of day, week, etc due to on-premise usage
patterns.
And the friggin' constant SYN flood attacks don't help. This is what
happens when we can't spank our children.

I wouldn't go there either. Probably do something very simple, maybe
with some inspiration from NTP, but primarily just for getting a roughly
correct clock without any expectation of sub-second accuracy. With
simulators this gets pretty pointless anyway.

Yes. It may be that it will work again if I update the hostname, but Johnny set up a
scheme for the map server to fetch the database via DECnet instead. That of course has
geek appeal, but it means I have to change the map data fetcher to use the DECnet session
API instead of the host OS socket interface. And time has been in short supply lately.

Done. It reported 24 updates, less than I expected after a 3.5 month interruption. For
now I took the easy way out, updating the db server host name. The switch to fetching
over DECnet will wait until some later time when I have spare capacity.
