How about SOS? Perhaps EDT's line mode is close enough
(or my ZX81 port), but it would be nice to have an Emacs emulation
mode where the cursor neatly always stays in the minibuffer...

I full agree with that sentiment, I can use Emacs to a basic degree (I don't progam in
elisp or anything) and it is a very effective editor.
Shame it doesn't come as standard on all *nix boxes, I have to revert to vi (UNIX) or
nano/pico (most Linux distros)
