Paul (or anybody) - has the -daemon (aka "-d") option been removed from
pyDECnet v596? It's still listed in the doc files, but running it gives
pydecnet: error: unrecognized arguments: --daemon

I suppose I could do this differently. For those features that have dependencies that are
optional, understand the switch or configuration flag even if it's not there, but then
reject the request with a message explaining the dependency.
So instead of "unrecognized arguments: --daemon" it would say something like:
--daemon not supported; install library package "python-daemon" to enable this
feature
It could given the "pip" command line to do that -- or is "install library
package x" clear enough?

Never mind. Turns out that you need to have the package python-daemon installed. If
you don’t have it then you won’t get any errors or complaints while installing pyDECnet,
but the –daemon option disappears.

I could probably deal with that part, but somebody else might need it. Or you could
always just say to RTFM, especially if you give the name of the relevant doc/...txt file.
BTW, since you're using Python3, shouldn't it be a "pip3" command?

I'm not a Python person, but on Debian and Ubuntu (and Mint, which is a
popular Ubuntu derivative) "python" and "pip" are still the v2
versions,
even with the latest distros. I think the fear is that it will break a
bunch of scripts if they change what "python" does.

Ubuntu 22.04. Python3 is now the default.

At least on Ubuntu pip and python won't alias to pip3/python3 without
the package python-is-python3 installed.

is becoming somewhat more common.

I seem to recall that it is (or at least was) canonically correct that "python"
should continue to bring up a Python 2 shell, and that "python3" is supposed to
be the correct way to get a Python 3 shell. It seems to me that the convention is honored
about half of the time, including on about half of my own computers. :)
