Very exciting. So Chris (cgk) and I are going to have fun trying a few
things:
- Current plan (in progress): give SSL over VDE switch a shot - probably
we will end up in a classic Ethernet loopback situation and move to plan B
- Plan B: bridge + tun/tap + dynamips
- Plan C: Radovan Brezula's GNS3 article
(
)
- Plan D: Scotch, double, on the rocks
I will disconnect my MULTINET uplink to HECnet while all this
experimentation goes on (don't want to worry Johnny too much).
We will report progress here.
Thanks again all!

You probably just want linux's built-in bridge
driver, which you
manage with brctl.
"br0" is the main interface, which you're free to assign a DECnet
compatible MAC address to. The other ports in the bridge/switch can be
any of real ethernet or tap interfaces.
Use a tap interface to run dynamips on. You can use dynagen to manage
your router instance.
I've literally been doing this for years. My HECnet router is a
dynamips emulated Cisco 720whatever on a tap interface with a GRE
tunnel over the Internet to Dave McGuire's area 61. I have my other
emulated systems on tap interfaces, all connected to the same virtual
bridge/switch on the same linux machine.

Yes, sorry, I should have described what I am trying to achieve.
Basically a few virtual nodes talking DECnet, AppleTalk and
NetBIOS/NetBEUI protocols (no IP), plugged into some virtual
switch or router that can setup a GRE tunnel to a real CISCO
switch on the other end, which also has DECnet and AppleTalk nodes
on it.
I came across this just now based on the pointers received so far
and will research this:

Thanks for the information; keep it coming!

Thank you for the clarification.

Dynamips doesn?t emulate Cisco switches; be

Routers with switch modules and a basic switch
implementation exists,
however.
You could in theory also tie to VDR
