Just needing to install stuff to a freshly installed VAXstation that’s on HECnet and
don’t have many other options for file transfer at the moment..
Is there a VMS Freeware CD shared anywhere?

OTOH, if you need to copy files over HECnet, let me know what specific
disc(s) you want (not everything on earlier Freeware disks were on later
ones) and I'll mount them and give you a nodename and access info.
I suggest you register for the MultiNet Hobbyist program here:
https://www.process.com/resources/openvms/hobbyist.html
It will ask you for your Hobbyist PAK checksum, but it seems to
happily
accept any properly-formatted checksums. Here's the one from the TSM
free-
ware: 2-JNHH-HBDJ-KNDA-BKJH
If you run into any problems, let me know and I'll pass them along.

you have a good TCP/IP stack running things will be a lot easier.

has bad attribs from passing thru other systems, so UNZIP can’t grok it and is telling me
I have to set it to stream using some utility on the freeware cd (which I can’t unzip :).
Hence the ask to copy it on HECnet so the file transfer doesn’t clobber the attribs and I
can actually use it.
If you can suggest some noob discs that have fun beginner stuff on them, I’m all ears!
Would def dig getting curl, python, c, stuff like that since I’m of course a unix devotee
by day…
Haven’t used VAX/VMS since teen years when my college still had a 780, so am super rusty
and don’t know anything about the advent of OpenVMS and all the modernizing porting of
unix stuff, etc.
Seems fun and exciting! We should do ‘real work’ like this using HECnet and make it
awesome. And I guess we are! Maybe I should take notes in hopes of making a new user
readme / tutorial / resources guide for HECnet _on HECnet_ :)

Snarfed UNZIP from OLAF00: already and have that working (thx Olof for kind file perms!)
So when I run unzip against my Multinet zip file it sobs “zip file is in variable length
record format please run bilf to convert to stream-LF”
So I guess I need either BILF or an untangled Multinet ZIP.
Gotta admit, HECnet is super charming and I’m having a blast complying with and immersing
in “the eighties.” My wife thinks I’m nuts (again) because I keep saying “Dang, this is
HARD.”

BILF is an abomination that should have been taken out and shot
decades ago, and would have been except for internal conflicts
within Info-ZIP.
Accept that your MultiNet zip is hopelessly mangled and use the
solution I sent you via direct mail.

Speaking of Process and vendors still supporting VMS ecosystem, anybody going to Sweden
for this VMS Bootcamp in May? I am so exuberant about my VS 3520 and VMS at the moment
I’m actually considering it. I mean, what if I could quit boring commodity computer work
and work on my beloved DEC stuff for real money! It’s been my dream since I was a teen.
But there are probably no jobs left in the field, right?
One other Q for Terri: what do I do with all these .a .b .c .d files? Googling for
instructions as soon as I hit send…

Yup, I used THNITH:: (a real 11/83 that has Johnny’s RSX TCP) to ftp my original Multinet
zip from Internet and then sent it to FASH:: (my VAXstation) over DECnet. That’s when I
found out about the attribute mangling caveat.

Getting files from the internet onto a VMS system with the right
attributes are not trivial. But it's also a question of even getting the
file over without any other kind of mangling happening along the way.
The obvious first question would be how you transferred it to the RSX
system in the first case...
But since a solution have presented itself, the question might be moot.
But in general, be ware that "binary" mode in ftp don't mean things
don't get messed up. Binary basically just means all bets are off. I
could go into more details about what I do in RSX with this and other
modes, if there is enough interest. But it becomes rather obscure, and
very RSX specific...

Multinet 6.0 is available for testing at the moment, for VAX, AXP, IA64 and X86_64.
I've been running it on VAX and X86_64 largely without incident, though I think
from what Hunter said, VAX's SSH capability will remain old due to its 32bitness.
Contact him if you want to do some testing.
I'm hoping it'll be offered via the hobbyist channel too when fully released.

You can grap .ZIPs or .BCKs (slowly) from Australia at
KOALA::FREEWARE: (node 35.630)
What is it that you're looking for? I can extract things that may quicker
to get at than the whole shebang.
There are .LIS files showing save-set contents and .LOG showing .ZIP file
contents.
