What is the simplest PDP-11 CPU/peripheral design that is capable of
running RSX-11, RSTS/E or BSD?
Also, what is the minimum disk space needed to install those operating
systems? I have a plan. Probably not a good one but I'll likely learn a lot
in the the process so it won't be a waste of time.

RSX-11M-PLUS can run from two RL02, if you just accept the pregen
system. But that's the smallest. If you want to build stuff, something
like an RK07 is required, and that is 28 Megs. But I think it's

are running on an RK07, and the update media is an RK07).

I'd have to say that you would want at least an 11/45 but that won't run
211BSD and I'm not sure about Ultrix. I'd be willing to test it though.

You can essentially group them in to a few different groups.
But for anything able to run RSX-11M-PLUS, RSTS/E and BSD, we're
essentially talking about the 11/70 class, which includes the 11/44,
11/70 and all J11 based machines. They are pretty similar, but I guess
the J11 is the slightly simpler one of them, if you really want to get
down to it.
Oh, and any Qbus machine is easier than Unibus ones.

With J11, the 11/93 (system board) was designed with no memory cache,
but full memory size (4 MByte) fast enough to run full processor speed,
thus making cache techniques non profitable. Maybe not an issue for the
CPU design itself, but quite central for the system design.
Previous (11/73, 11/83, possibly also 11/53) used cache, thus are they
more complicated compared to 11/93.
Memory mapping is there in all of them, naturally, as 16 address-bits in
the CPU must cope with 22 (or 18) bits of memory addressing, but I doubt
that any "modern version" of the asked systems will run in a PDP with
only 32 kWord/64 kByte memory.

But for anything able to run RSX-11M-PLUS, RSTS/E and BSD, we're
essentially talking about the 11/70 class, which includes the 11/44,
11/70 and all J11 based machines. They are pretty similar, but I guess
the J11 is the slightly simpler one of them, if you really want to get
down to it.
Oh, and any Qbus machine is easier than Unibus ones.

If you want to see what will actually run on somewhat limited hardware,
then Paul Nankervis's PDP11/45 emulator
<https://skn.noip.me/pdp11/pdp11-45.html>has a nice collection of operating
systems running on a 256K system. 2.9 BSD boots and runs from an simulated
RL02. (2.11 BSD needs an 11/70 or better.) This should at least show what
is possible.

A pdp11/53 can run all the OSes Brian mentioned, to which I'd add RT-11,
(specifically) 2.11BSD (no need to run 2.9) and Ultrix 3.x, and that's a
fairly simple and straightforward tower machine, and certainly a lot
smaller and more power-friendly than an 11/70.

I'm still wondering "simplest" in what sense? Are you assembling an actual
PDP-11 system? Or building a simulated one in FPGAs? Or in SIMH? Are the peripherals
involved in the question as well?
A minimal RSTS V6 or thereabouts system would be an 11/40 with EIS and at least 64 kW of
memory. For V10, I'm not sure if an 11/40 is still supported but an 11/45 would be
ok, and minimal memory is 124 kW at this point. For V6, you can fit a reasonable system
on an RK05; for V10, you'll need a bit more than that I suspect but not a whole lot.
For terminals, you could attach a couple of DL-11s, or a DZ11 mux. (DH11 also works but
that is not a simple device.) Later releases give you more options, like the DHU11 or
even LAT.
Simple peripherals: a DL11 is as simple a terminal interface as you'll find. An RK05
is a very simple disk; RK06 is similar. RL01 is a bit more complex conceptually because
of its packet interface, though not a whole lot. MSCP disks are very nice but trying to
emulate them would be a fairly large job. As seen by software, Massbus disks are also
simple; the extra bus interfaces are hardware complexity that doesn't make much
difference to the software. So if you wanted a "classic" (CSR style) disk, but
large, you could emulate an RP06 or even (not officially supported but works fine at least
as of V7) an RP07.
The above is how I would approach the question if it is "simple in an FPGA".
For SIMH, none of this matters, there I would just pick MSCP because it doesn't worry
about device sizes.
For real hardware for RSTS, the answer would be "anything you can find that is
supported". That's pretty much any PDP-11 so long as it has EIS (MUL and DIV),
memory management, and enough memory. And you could use an 11/20 or 11/10 with RSTS V4
(but not RSTS/E).

complexity we are looking to minimize.
Also, are you confusing the RL11 with some other controller? The RL11
don't have any packet interface. If anything, it's a bit more stupid
than most, since it can't even do a proper seek. But the added
complexity because of that is small.

Yes, it looks like I was mixed up. Perhaps TS11? The classic packet oriented controller
is of course the MSCP series.

New subject: MOKSHA update: Cisco 7206VXR

MOKSHA (1.579) is now an emulated Cisco 7206VXR router with R7000 CPU
running IOS 12.3(15). Please see if you can update the HECnet database
whenever you get around to updating it next (absolutely no hurry!).
I am very new to CISCO and am hoping to eventually get to a point where
I can have a redundant connection to HECnet through this router. What is
the recommended way to connect to HECnet via a CISCO router?

New subject: MOKSHA update: Cisco 7206VXR
If my Cisco tunnel config engine still works you can use that. It pushes
tunnel configs to your router.
