You do not need high performance hardware to run the bridge. I've done it with
a Pentium-166 running NetBSD. The performance issues come from the WAN
bandwidth, or lack thereof... :-)

All HECnet traffic passes thru the system that runs the bridge program.
That particular system does have a 100 Mb/s ethernet card but unfortunately
runs on a 450 MHz Pentium II machine with 256 MB memory... Not exactly hi
performance hardware :(

COPY copies only in record mode. To speed up things you should use a tool
like DEC's FTSV which does block mode copies (among other things).
