I was wondering about this myself as well, how do you actually find
interesting things on HECnet without actively probing anything? The
INFO.TXT does seem to be a good thing for this, and by looking at it, I
need to start getting things into order :)

There have also been suggestions for standardizing the format of that file.
I don't think my example might be following any such standards, and I'm not
sure how important/useful that could be.
But I think it's a better system for giving random information about nodes
than the nodename database, as there can be all kind of odd information you
can put there.

whether or not the particular system has a guest account, or offers
user accounts? The question of which nodes are "open" comes up on the
list now and again, and I don't remember there being any authoritative
list.
