PS just to be clear I would try plugging in the $20 Verizon ONT into Optimum or whoever’s
fiber - it may just work. Otherwise we lose $20.

I told Verizon I manage my own LAN and to connect my wall-mounted RJ45 to their WAN and
they put in this ONT. it is available on eBay for around $20. I use a home-built miniPC
with a PCI quad-NIC running Sophos UTM9 in a Virtualbox on Linux as the main router that
does DHCP for WAN and three different subnets on the LAN side (smart home/iot, hobby lab
and general purpose family subnets). I think you can just buy a ONT off eBay and be done.
I believe it’s a Alcatel thing.

getting Optical-Ethernet converters, which I don't think are what I want.
