"front end" functions were implemented in special microcode for the V11 chip. 
Still used an RT11 file system, though.  (the 11/750 was a similar idea, but requiring
more cubic feet :) 
 
   You're right about the bigger 8000 family members - 8600, 85xx, 8800, etc - though.
