I seem to recall that it is (or at least was) canonically correct that "python"
should continue to bring up a Python 2 shell, and that "python3" is supposed to
be the correct way to get a Python 3 shell. It seems to me that the convention is honored
about half of the time, including on about half of my own computers. :)
