The bridge don't implement stp so you would create a horrible traffic storm if you had
a "back up bridge".
Sorry, but this is just a limitation of the bridge software. There are reasons I recommend
other solutions to the bridge.

I?m quite happy to act as some sort of additional
bridge. I have
symmetric DSL running around 80Mbits and systems that remain on.

I'm in area 61, and I can get to my area and MIM, but everything else
seems unreachable both Saturday and Sunday. Anyone else notice anything
weird?
