By interoperate, I meant that @host might signal a tcp/ip finger call
to host whereas host:: would be decnet.
It's implementation-specific. My implementations allow "finger
user@host"
regardless of transport. VMS Finger tries DECnet, BITNET (defunct) and
then
TCP/IP in that order. Of course, if the command was "finger host::user"
then
it will just try DECnet. RSTS/E Finger looks up the host part in the
local
DECnet node database and if it finds a match, it connects directly.
Other-
wise, it passes the entire command along to a "smart host" (if
configured)
which is assumed to either have a larger DECnet node database or
additional
transports like TCP/IP.

The TCP/IP finger spec says that each line should end with CR+LF.
As for "interoperate", I'm not sure how you mean that. But I can tell
that my RSX implementation talks over both DECnet, TCP/IP and locally.
But generally, I'm trying to advocate for as much alignment between
the DECnet and TCP/IP finger as possible. Obviously the network
underlying functions are not identical, but beyond that I prefer that
we align as much as is reasonable. So CR+LF at each line end. In
DECnet, be aware of the size of packets sent. At the moment, I suggest
each packet sent is just one line, but if we can work out, and agree
on some other value, I'm happy to comply. But it can't be huge, as a
PDP-11 do not have unlimited memory. :-)
