It probably got used for a lot of things, but it looks like a case for a
VAXstation 100 system unit. It's not clear in the picture - are there ribs
about 5-6 inches up on the inside, that a small desktop sized case could
rest on? The one I had, those ribs got in the way and kept it from having
enough room for a DEC PRO, which was a bit wider than the VS100 system box.
I wonder if the DECmate-II was narrow enough to fit?
