- HECnet - lists @ Update

Is anyone aware of any known bugs related to LAT on V5.5-2? I turned on LAT on PDXVAX yesterday and was logged in via LAT with a VT420 connected to a DECserver 90TL. At some point it crashed and had to be rebooted. As PDXVAX is a very stable system, I tend to suspect LAT. Zane

That cat just came out this week and there are sure as somebody made green apples going to be bugs. I'll need to spend some time diagnosing it properly if I'm to report it to Apple, I suspect just telling them that "simh VAX network emulation isn't working" wouldn't be a very well received bug report ;-) And it's obviously more subtle that just a broken libpcap because my LAT software (which also uses libpcap - though obviously slightly differently) works perfectly, also I copied libpcap from my un-upgraded Mac to test simh, and it's still broken on the new OS, which implies it's something that has changed in the kernel. Instead of using a 'dynamic' version of libpcap, try building the source to libpcap, and then build SIMH, however instead of linking libpcap (-lpcap) have it link the object files from libpcap.... I find building it that way on OSX tended to survive os upgrades.. at least on the PPC versions... Anybody using HP CIFS (aka Samba for VMS) ?

I'm using V1.1. I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini this afternoon (no snide comments please), and it seems to have broken something in libpcap such simh networking no longer works. I've tried a few obvious things to no avail. So my normal emulated router ROOSTA is down at the moment. I've booted up the real VAX called Zarqon to keep the network running and it should be OK for a while, or at least until I need to use that room for recordings. Chrissie

GORVAX and CHIMPY down

Well the BBS is not running on VMS but CHIMPY does have an account (B4BBS) that automagically connects to the service. The BBS runs as a Win2k VM on the same physical machine as GORVAX. Incidentally Johnny the examples came up on a posting to the list for the SIMH family of emulators, tapes et cetera from the RSTS fan site, http://www.rsts.org . On that site the author mentions that the collection would work on John Wilson's excellent E11 emulator, so I'm not surprised that the individual there had gotten the whole thing to work on his SIMH emulation kit, except for some interesting problems. Of course the next problem is working out the details for creating this whole business for doing so, I imagine that a commodity router who's got my current Ethernet network all wired together would not do that. That was Phase II -- no routing, DMC/DMR only. For 2 or 3 nodes, that was a useable version. Phase III (single level routing) appeared in V7.1. (That was my project -- first RSTS/E project I worked on if you ignore a week on PIP in the V6B timeframe.) That would serve for installations up to about 250 nodes. It took so long because it was hard to convince management to allow the work in the first place. To get the same level of service I had with my ISP and DSL, I'm stuck paying more than twice as much, plus I still have an account with my ISP to keep my email. I'm now sitting on a 20Mbit/5Mbit Commercial FIOS line, so I have more bandwidth than I know what to do with. I am noticing that DECnet performance seems drastically improved. Ain't FiOS grand? I've had FiOS here for about a year and a half and have loved it. I'd love to upgrade to their next higher tier that they have available (25 Mbps/15 Mbps) for just $10/month more, but since I have 5 IP addresses that I'm somehow getting for free now, if I were to upgrade I'd have to start paying for them as well making it quite not as attractive. --Marc

I'm happy to report that PDXVAX and MONK are *FINALLY* back online, after being down for a few days short of a year. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay online all the time for the next month, but will try, it will depend on if we get another heat wave or not since I don't have any cooling for the computers. Things aren't totally back to normal, www.avanthar.com still points to my .Mac account, as I need to find time to move some data back to my own server. However, http://aracnet.com:8080/nodes/ is working at the moment to generate a list of what's currently online on HECnet. Since it shows CODA as a VAXstation 90A, I'm pretty sure my data file that lists machine types and offered services needs updated. :-) I'm now sitting on a 20Mbit/5Mbit Commercial FIOS line, so I have more bandwidth than I know what to do with.
