I know I've seen patches to simh on the net to get the bridge
functionality inside simh.
I did some more searching and found this one
http://gunkies.org/wiki/Networking_with_SIMH#HECnet
it appears that this (very short!) patch allows simh to talk directly to the
bridge in Uppsala without needing a bridge on this end at all. It seems too
good to be true, but I guess I'll give it a try.

That depends on the machine. It requires that you receive the packets that you send out. On some machines, they do, and on some they don't.
That said, I know I've seen patches to simh on the net to get the bridge functionality inside simh. Could that be an option?

There's a patch which adds this functionality for OpenBSD and Linux.
It's possible to add it for FreeBSD/NetBSD too, but I don't have working system to test it.

OK, the cache is configured to pass through (I won't know if it's caching correctly till I turn SLAVE off).
It's also worth noting that if http://hecnet.eu doesn't work http://hecnet.eu:8080 is always a direct connection to SLAVE.

I am getting connection timed out when I try to browse it.
Traceroute from my location goes off into the weeds somewhere in
demon.net. No response to pings either but lots of things don't
respond to pings any more at the best of times.
IIRC HECnet.eu is run off Mark Wickens's AlphaServer
(SLAVE::) and is not always online.

Looks like it's more complicated than that - I can't see any of the configured NAT ports from the outside world, and the router is configured correctly, so I guess I have an issue with my ISP. Wouldn't be the first time mind...

Guilty as charged...
hecnet.eu is served by a squid proxy on my 24/7 box. This was atom but is now a HP MicroServer, but for some configuration reason the squid proxy isn't caching properly at the moment, so it will only forward on requests to the originator, SLAVE, which is the AlphaServer.
It's a good reminder for me to take another look...

I think maybe a more comprehensive Makefile that dies if it can't find libpcap would be useful but not urgent.
Yeah. Some more documentation on how to play around in make might be nice. The makefile is extremely minimal, which I tossed together in a minute several years ago...

The cc command takes that switch, but it's not obvious, when using the makefile, how you get that in there.
Depending on your make, and the phase of the moon, and so on, you might get it by doing:
"make CCOPTS=-dDPORT=xxx"
or
"make CCFLAGS=-dDPORT=xxx"
and CCFLAGS might be CFLAGS, and CCOPTS might be COPTS, I just can't remember straight off my head.
but it might be something else as well. You could also just change the makefile to include that flag on the c compile line.
I included it on the 'cc' line but it spat it out.
As a CCFLAG it worked okay.

That's all on proviso that Chrissie's wants to move...
Could Chrissie and you, Mark, work this over and give me an update?
Will see where it goes. Presumably it would mean I have to provide area routing 24/7?
That's not an issue provided the power stays on at my place. My area router needs manual intervention to restart.
I'm happy to move my nodes. My remaining ones are

3.34 ROOSTA simh Emulated VAX
