Hello!
Once again I've been spending a lot of free time to consider an interesting
question. What can connect to our network, and what can't? Or for that
matter what shouldn't be connected at all.

Ditto here, although there are fewer nodes/areas online now than
previously. LEGATO continues to think that it can reach areas 52 and 59 via
A54RTR, although I don't believe any nodes are actually up in either area.
As far as I can see, LEGATO is probably correct in what it is thinking.
The GRE tunnels from A54RTR to area 59 are up.

Attempting to query some nodes in area 59 results in:
-SYSTEM-F-NOSUCHOBJ, network object is unknown at remote node
which sounds like a node that is reachable but doesn't have an NML listener.
If the node was not reachable the resulting error would likely be:
-SYSTEM-F-UNREACHABLE, remote node is not currently reachable

How does the Cisco DECnet decide what's up and what's down? It looks like
these Cisco boxes may think that areas are up and reachable even when
they're not.
I expect they behave the same as DECnet routers implemented by Dec.
I don't think they are reporting anything up that is is not really up.

Peter Coghlan.

The router(s) in area 52 and 59 don't appear to speak (much) NML either.
Probably more of the same Cisco boxes...

I'll start!
Various such lists have been started over time, but I don't think anybody
was willing to maintain them.
I agree that it's hard to figure out routing issues when the network
topology is unknown! A nice HECnet map would be worth its weight in gold
about now.

The Multinet license on SG1:: has expired. I tried to connect to
process.com to fix this but it keeps timing out. At the moment the only
thing running from this site is the bridge.
Stay tuned...

In the meantime, maybe we could ask members to check-in with their area,
name, and location. That would help me figure out what is going on at
this end. It may help others as well.
Area 54 is located in Dublin, Ireland. Router is CEIRE connected via Multinet
tunnel. A second (Cisco) router A54RTR is connected via GRE tunnels. No bridge
connections here.
Everything looks ok from here now. I can reach area 7. Earlier, area 7 appeared
in the list of known networks here but I could not reach it. It appeared to me
that only GORVAX was advertising that it knew how to reach area 7 directly,
which was odd for an area connected via the bridge.
Regards,
Peter Coghlan.
Ian,
I would run either RSX-11M-PLUS or RSTS/E. I am running RSTS/E on one
machine, and if I can ever recover my RSX kit I will be running M+ on
the other machine.

My Multinet link to area 59 is down, but LEGATO thinks area 59 is
accessible thru CEIRE, which thinks that it's accessible thru A54RTR. The
latter box apparently doesn't speak NML (or won't talk to me) so I can't ask
it what's going on. Peter??? Are you out there?? Is area 59 up or
down??? And what's A54RTR?
Hi Bob,
At least one of the Peters involved is here :-)
A54RTR is a Cisco IGS which has GRE tunnels to area 59 on test. It appears
the more standard connection from area 59 to the rest of Hecnet (via SG1
perhaps?) is down.
A similar thing is going on with area 52 (CEIRE -> A54RTR -> ???) although
I don't have a Multinet link in this instance. Are there any machines in
area 52 actually up?
Area 52 appears to be reachable via area 59. It looks likely that area 52
should also be reachable via SG1 but isn't.
The router(s) in area 52 and 59 don't appear to speak (much) NML either.
At this moment I can't see anything from area 7. I guess John has just turned off his side.

SG1 does appear to bounce up and down fairly often. This is an old problem that was discussed but never really resolved. Since SG1 is an area routing node, having it bounce undoubtedly confuses things.

Yes. More if you know that BITXT2 is a KLH-10 machine running inside a VBox machine running in the same host as BITXOO (the node from which I executed the command).
To be honest, I have absolutely no clue about what's going on. At the same time the CPU usage of the host machine skyrocketed to 200% (100% of both cores). To add to the weidnesness, I run a java applications server (glassfish) there, and it was over 90% of CPU... when it should be idle.
I guess I need to do a preventive IPL of that machine.
