Guys,
I remember there's a clean / elegant way of telling another node to run a DCL script for me, but have totally forgotten how to do it.
Basically, I have three nodes, A, B and C.

Now I want node A (as user FOO) to be able to tell node B and C to run a script on them, as user FOO.
How do I do this?
I notice that you figured out one way, which is to use network communication to a named task.
Another is to submit a batch job on another node. A third is (I seem to remember) the ability to just request a program to be run on a remote node, but that might some RSX specific thing. I can check in manuals if you want to know more, as my memory is fuzzy on the specifics.

And just answered my own question: The permissions on KUHAVX::SYS$MANAGER:TELL.COM were wrong, it needed W:RE.

IIRC CDE became available on Alpha well before Compaq took over.
BTW real DECwindows is called VWS and runs on vax/vms pre V5.0 :-)

No, I mean REAL DECWindows! ;) On Alpha you can select either DECWindows (I think it's called that, may be DW-MOTIF or something) or CDE. When faced with the option on DEC systems, the original DECWindows is... more authentic :) CDE was somewhat of a late addition as far as I know, I think HP or Compaq grafted it in, probably HP as it's used on HP-UX. I don't think CDE is available on 7.3 VAX...

On the bright side, though, it does at least mean that various people might start rolling out improvements for it on the various platforms it lives on, especially AIX (which is the only current platform it's left on I think??)

Hello!
Correct. I remember seeing it running that way back when HP had
demonstration space at their offices here, also before when it was
Compaq.
When was VMS ported to Alpha? I recall being at the Alpha launch party
at the (then) DEC offices here in the city, and saw a box running
Windows NT (Alpha) and the man lamented that if too many windows were
open the system would slow down.
I also recall seeing a MIPS based DEC workstation at the UNIX expos
and the DEC chap described the coming NT system for it.
Never did anything with that family, but well I kept up to date.

Anyway I passed along your good news Sampsa to my LUG, everyone seemed
rather pleased.

Now, I wish that were true, I could sure use some relaxing burning and pillaging right now.
Some time ago, psilo (the bridge) broke down and we replaced the motherboard/CPU/Memory with whatever we had lying around. The motherboard had issues and finally broke down last week. We bought a brand new combo just to find that the new motherboard BIOS wasn't compatible with the specific version of Ivy Bridge CPU we got. And all stores had closed.
So today we finally got a new motherboard to match the new CPU and we are back.
Remember we are running this out of a closet waiting for the computer room to be fixed. And we can finally get out of, erm, the closet.
We are hoping to get things in proper order then, like a failover for the mailing list.
cheers,
Pontus.
