If this is going to be used around HECnet, what's wrong with using proper

The nicknames and usernames don't map to each other - one user might have multiple nicks etc.
Be sure to pull an XMPP and set resources...multiple identical users at the same time. ;)

The problem with PHONE is that you can't see a centralised directory of the whole network and who's on.
I tried to write a script on a Linux-DECNET box to get such a directory but it broke something on BQT's systems.
IM's are slightly different, as I'm sure you're aware.
The benefits to phone are:
- You are notified when your buddies log on, anywhere on HECnet
- You can control who can message you (i.e. buddies only)

Aren't you reinventing PHONE? ;)
Only insofar as to use it on an actual phone I hope. ;)

On the plus side, I have an almost working instant messaging client and

Don't folks on HECnet have PHONE enabled???

But to be honest, it's not really ready for the Big Bad Internet out there, security is rather lax (e.g. plaintext passwords, yeah, I know, but I just couldn't be arsed to do a challenge-response thing in DCL)

I'm interested!
Now make it work on android and iPhone OS via a HECnet link. ;)

The protocol is pretty simple, I suppose if I wrote a TCP/IP wrapper as well then someone could write a Android/iOS client..
